Guess whoā€™s back at OpenAI

Itā€™s hard to miss the irony that the tussle over OpenAIā€™s leadership was a very human affair. So I decided to ask coldhearted ChatGPT who its CEO should be. It told me, ā€œleadership decisions can be influenced by various factors, and opinions on who should be the CEO can vary.ā€ You can say that again, pal.

Sam Altman to return as CEO of OpenAI

What a week itā€™s been. After a five-day boardroom coup, Sam Altman is returning as CEO of OpenAI. Greg Brockman is also coming back as president.

Altman and Brockman will be joined by a new board comprising Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam Dā€™Angelo. Their job is to extend the board to up to nine people in order to reset OpenAIā€™s governance. Microsoft wants a seat, as does Altman.

One of the big reasons Altman is back is the behavior of employees after he was ousted. Many of them threatened to defect to Microsoft if the board didnā€™t resign. For a moment, it looked like Microsoft may have been about to acquire one of the worldā€™s most exciting and valuable companies for nothing, and with no regulatory scrutiny.
