OpenAI lifts military ban to work with the Pentagon

OpenAI is working with the Pentagon on a number of projects ($) including cybersecurity tools. Speaking to Bloomberg at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the company’s vice president of global affairs Anna Makanju said the ChatGPT maker had also had initial talks with the US government about helping prevent veteran suicide.

The partnership marks a departure for OpenAI, which previously had a ban on providing AI to militaries. The company maintains a restriction on using its tech to develop weapons, destroy property, or harm people.

OpenAI also said that it’s speeding up work on election security to ensure its generative AI tools aren’t used to spread political disinformation.
