Netflix finally releases viewership data

Netflix has released the first of what it says will be regular viewership reports, disclosing how many people watch its shows.

The Night Agent was the most popular title globally in the first half of the year, racking up more than 812 million hours of watch time. Season 2 of the family drama Ginny & Georgia came in second, with about 665 hours, followed by South Korean series The Glory.

Netflix refused to disclose viewership figures for years. Initially, Hollywood’s creatives appreciated not being beholden to Nielsen audience ratings, which measure success on traditional television.

But writers and producers began to argue that Netflix was withholding audience data to avoid paying more for its most successful shows. Requiring Hollywood studios to share streaming data ended up being written into the new contract with the Writers Guild of America after its recent strike.
