Facebook ditches News tab in US and Australia
Meta is removing Facebook’s dedicated news section in April for users in the US and Australia, in another step in the company’s efforts to distance itself from the news industry. The decision comes after the company said it would remove the section for users in the UK, France, and Germany.
Along with other social media companies, Meta has come under fire for how it addresses misinformation and enforces content moderation policies in its apps, prompting regulation from the UK and other countries. The company had previously restricted news content for Australian users following a law that required it to pay fees to news outlets, but the decision was reversed in 2021.
Meta launched Facebook News in 2019 as a way to “bring people closer to the stories that affect their lives”. But since then it’s reallocated resources to short-form video content amid competition from TikTok.
