British billionaire Joe Lewis, whose family owns Tottenham Hotspur football club, has been spared jail in the US for insider trading. Heāll receive a $5 million fine and three years of probation instead.
The 87-year-old previously pleaded guilty to fraud charges, admitting to passing on stock tips to friends, including a girlfriend, resulting in over half a million dollars in illegal gains. Despite facing a possible two-year sentence, Lewis was recommended probation due to his deteriorating health. Prosecutors also took into account the fact that he has āotherwise lived a law-abiding lifeā and his voluntary surrender to the authorities.
Lewis expressed remorse for his actions, describing them as a āterrible mistakeā driven by āhubris and childish exuberanceā. He emphasized the self-inflicted nature of his humiliation and accepted the consequences he would bear for the rest of his life.
