Will we have to pay for Twitter soon?
āThis website is freeā, goes the common response to unhinged Twitter, now X, content. That may no longer be the case, according to Elon Musk. I donāt know what Iām going to do with all the spare time if it happens. Itāll be like lockdown all over again. Banana bread, anyone?

Musk suggests X will go behind a paywall
When Elon Musk bought what was Twitter in 2022, he inherited a problem. The platform was burning through cash. In its last quarterly earnings report before the acquisition, Twitter reported a $344 million loss ā about $4 million a day.
His first attempt was to introduce Blue, an $8 subscription service that offered an array of benefits including the famous blue tick. Now Musk may be going a step further. In a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk said the social network is āmoving to having a small monthly payment for use of the X systemā.
Rather than talking about money, Muskās rationale is that charging users is necessary to combat the āvast armies of botsā. Fighting bots was one of Muskās key reasons for buying the company. Awkwardly, researchers recently found the problem is worse than ever. Only time will tell whether a cost of admission will keep X afloat or run it into the ground.
